Strategic Reading at Colchester Middle School


In Strategic Reading, students are introduced to strategies in the areas of Fluency, Word Study and Comprehension, to assist them in becoming “better readers”.   

In the area of Fluency, students are introduced to a series of repeated reading activities to help promote automaticity in reading. 

·       Ie. Speed Drills, Phrase Drills, Reading of Connected Text, Reader’s Theater, Poetry, etc.

In the area of Word Study, the students are taught about the different syllable types and how to divide and read difficult vocabulary words.  

·       Ie. Dividing words into syllable types using cutting patterns (White Boards), Word Game, etc.

In the area of Comprehension, using text, students are introduced to a variety of strategies to help them understand the text they are reading. 

·       Ie. Point of View, Text Structures, Visualizing activities, Active Reader Strategies, Think Aloud/Read Aloud – with comprehension activities, etc.
